A dentist will examine your tongue as part of a routine dental check-up. Your tongue can show signs of dental problems which could affect the health of your teeth and gums.
- If you have a red or shiny-looking tongue, it may be a sign you are lacking nutrients like iron or certain vitamins.
- The infection oral thrush can be indicated by a tongue having patches or being creamy in appearance.
- A yellow tongue or one which feels fuzzy may point to a build-up of bacteria that could result in bad breath.
"Symptoms of oral thrush, including lesions on the tongue or a burning sensation, typically start on the tongue and can progress to the other soft tissues of the oral cavity."
